Anomalous, and “Anomaly One”
This weekend, I realized I haven’t written a proper song since I finished writing The Awakening just after Thanksgiving last year. There are plenty of reasons for this—The Awakening was a tough project that took a lot out of me, I’m emotionally in an okay place, I’ve been focusing more on photography, etc.—but it still bothers me a bit.
The truth is I have been writing material intermittently throughout the year, but I don’t really know what to do with it. Almost all of it is in the form of classical guitar mini-pieces that I’ve used to study more interesting chord progressions. None of these pieces have associated lyrics or vocal melodies, and as best as I can tell, very few of them have any hope of transforming into the sort of indie rock song I typically write. Still, I want to start recording again, so I’ve decided to record these little guitar doodles as part of a project I’m calling Anomalous.
I’m kicking off the project with a piece I’ve creatively entitled “Anomaly One.” When I wrote it, I think I was going for some sort of dark, decidedly American sound, but I’m not sure if I succeeded. It feels bluesy in spirit, if not necessarily in style. Whatever it is, I like it, so please give it a listen and, if you’re so inclined, let me know what you think.
